One intern needed to assist U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge in the greater San Francisco Bay Area from January thru March 2012. Intern will conduct field work primarily on Southeast Farallon Island, located approximately 28 miles offshore of the city of San Francisco (http://www.fws.gov/sfbayrefuges/Farallon/index.htm). Office work and data entry will be conducted at the refuge headquarters in Fremont, CA. This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities include: Invasive plant control utilizing a variety of methods including mechanical and chemical applications, plant surveys and mapping, some wildlife surveys (e.g., birds, amphibians, invertebrates, pinnipeds), database entry, supply and equipment inventories, occasional early morning/weekend work, working with staff, cooperators and volunteers, and other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Incumbent must be able to adjust to isolated duty and to live compatibly and in close association with other people. Incumbent will live and work up to 4 weeks at a time at a remote and rustic island field station, located on Southeast Farallon Island. Accommodations and chores will be shared. Work and transport plans are often affected by weather factors, sea conditions, and limited availability of transportation. Transport to the island will occur on a boat and can take from 2-6 hours depending on the type of boat and sea conditions. Weather on the island is often cool, windy and wet, so appropriate water proof and cool-weather clothing is a must. Qualifications: Required: Valid drivers license; comfortable driving heavy freeway and city traffic; ability to endure up to several hours on a boat in rough sea conditions; ability to perform physical labor that requires extended periods of bending, kneeling, walking on rocky, steep and unstable ground, pulling plants; general knowledge of biological data gathering and techniques; wildlife observation and basic plant identification skills; physical ability to use varied equipment, vehicles, and tools to complete field work; ability to work in harsh weather and steep rocky terrain; basic computer experience including Microsoft Office and Excel.

Compensation: Shared housing is provided at the Fremont headquarters and field station at Southeast Farallon Island and vehicle is provided as necessary during work hours only. $150/week stipend.
